About the Artist
Doug Burns has been a professional calligrapher and designer for nearly
thirty years.
His professionalism and stylistic flair have made him an internationally-known
artist.
He works with 18th century-style pens and inks that he formulates himself.
He makes the gold ink that you will see highlighting some of the work
displayed on this website by carefully grinding 24 carat gold coins into a
fine powder and mixing it into an ink base. Some of his pens were
manufactured in the 1860's.
He carefully selects his papers for color and texture to help make the
experience of receiving and handling his work pure joy.
Mr. Burns' clients have been referred by luminaries such as Shreve, Crump
& Low, Cartier, Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale's, as well as
by other satisfied clients.
In an age when even art is a mass-produced consumer item, the personal touch
of Mr. Burns' artistry stands out.
Whether he is reproducing calligraphic styles of the past or creating his own,
his fluid hand expresses a grace that no printer can ever match.
His decorative flourishes, such as the ones at left and below, enliven the
work.
In the Spring of 1983, Mr. Burns was featured in the Society Rag,
